Orienting Towards Health
Dear Friends,
There is a concept in Craniosacral Therapy called Orienting Towards Health (OTH). It is a therapeutic interchange in which the body’s innate capacity for healing is illuminated and held.
Usually when we are sick, we orient towards our uncomfortable symptoms. If instead, we start to notice how good it feels to lie in bed, to take comfort in warm tea, and to enjoy the snuggles of a pet, the shift in perspective helps to mitigate the bad feelings and direct our attention towards the healing response.
OTH isn’t about manufacturing positive feelings. It’s a philosophy that recognizes that something inside of us is always healthy: parts of us can be altered by physical or mental illness and our essential selves will still shine through.
OTH directs our attention to that which is safe and whole so that we can spend as little energy as possible resisting discomfort and more of our energy attuning to health. OTH helps us notice and observe what supports us even when very little does. It’s a way to work with ourselves that cultivates internal strength.
When we are struggling, it’s not easy to hold ourselves in this energy. That’s why craniosacral practitioners can be an essential part of the process. Craniosacral Therapy is a hybrid of medicine, manual therapy, and relationship: it is not easy to describe or quantify.
It’s a space where we can relax and let the body remember its essence, The sublime can be felt and channeled for healing.
