Letting Things Happen (Again)...

I am surprised to find that I have a new year's resolution!

I resolve to forge a better balance between making things happen and letting things happen.

With so much uncertainty tugging at my sleeve, it’s been hard to resist the urge to optimize–I’d go as far as to say compulsively optimize—to avoid the turbulence of the unknown.

This is a funny paradox for a yogi. We literally devote ourselves to the opposite--breathing. The steadiness inherent in the simple act of feeling our lifeforce is affirming. Nevertheless, there are stressors so constant, triggering or insidious that, even for dedicated practitioners, the BREATH-Brain-Barrier fails. When this happens, our least flattering behaviors surface (which looked this time like the most elaborate and unattainable to-do lists).

Letting Things Happen is a kind of course correction.

It can feel cringy to consider putting down obligations when we all know they aren’t going away. But being and experiencing are important for all aspects of our health. Stress and breath compete for the same mental real estate.

It is impossible to breathe easy when stress levels are high.

For this reason, in my transition toward Letting Things Happen (Again) I am making one small change. I resolve for one whole year to free my breath. I believe better breathing will lead to more growth than any other new year’s resolution. The potential for less stress, improved immune function, reduced blood pressure, better vagal tone, better posture, less frequent headaches, reduced fatigue, and less neck pain is exciting.

Breathing FREE is INSPIRING.

Can't wait to see where this leads.
